NEC History
1899 Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.1is established with Western Electric Company of the United States to become the first Japanese joint venture with foreign capital. 1899 Production, sales and maintenance of telephones and switching systems begin. 1901 Production facilities are modernized with construction of Mita Plant at the site of the present head office.
1924 Radio communications business begins. 1925 Electron tube development program starts. 1925 Radio Tokyo2, Japan's first broadcasting organization is supplied with Western Electric Company broadcasting equipment imported by NEC. 1928 A phototelegraphic equipment is developed and successfully used to transmit photos of the enthronement from Kyoto to Tokyo. 1929 Japan's Ministry of Communications supplied with NEC's A-type switching system, the first of its kind to be developed in Japan. 1934 China Xinjing Station is supplied with 100kW radio broadcasting system. 1937 Japan's Ministry of Communications is supplied with nonloaded line carrier equipment for long-distance telephone channels. 1939 Research laboratory is established in the Tamagawa Plant. 1944 NEC becomes the first company in Japan to successfully test microwave multiplex communications.
1950 Transistor R&D begins. 1951 The first postwar major export contract is signed with Korea for radio broadcast equipment. 1952 NEC receives the Deming Prize for excellence in quality control. 1954 Computer R&D begins. 1956 The first crossbar switching system produced in Japan is installed at a Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT)3 central office. 1956 In cooperation with NTT, joint R&D of electronic switching systems (ESSs) begins. 1958 NEC establishes Taiwan Telecommunication Company as first postwar overseas joint venture. 1958 The parametron electronic computer NEAC-1101 and NEAC-1102 are completed. 1959 The first fully transistorized NEC-made computer (NEAC-2201) is demonstrated with favorable reviews at UNESCO AUTOMATH Show in Paris. 1960 Integrated circuit R&D begins. 1963 New NEC shares are issued in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), and 10 million shares of common stock are sold in the United States. 1963 Microwave communication lines for U.S. military forces based in Japan are completed. 1963 Nippon Electric New York4, Inc. is incorporated.
1964 NEC supplies satellite communications ground facilities for Trans-Pacific TV broadcasting of the 18th Olympic Games in Tokyo. 1964 NEC supplies one of Japan's overseas telecommunications carriers, KDD, with submarine cable systems to be laid in the Pacific Ocean. 1965 Short-haul, 24-channel PCM carrier transmission equipment is delivered to NTT. 1965 Experimental automated mail service designed for Omiya Post Office. 1968 - 69 NEC de Mexico, S. A. de C. V., NEC do Brasil, S. A., NEC Australia Pty. Ltd. are established. 1971 SPADE5 satellite communications system is supplied to Comsat Corporation of the United States. 1972 Switzerland orders NEC satellite communications earth station. 1972 Small transportable satellite communications earth station is set up in China. 1973 Shares of NEC common stock are listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. 1973 Automated broadcasting system is designed for Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). 1973 NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH is established. 1974 Shares of NEC common stock are listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. 1974 The ACOS series computer is introduced. 1975 New Central Research Laboratories are completed. 1977 Japan's National Space Development Agency launches the NEC-produced Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (Himawari). 1977 Marketing concept, "C&C," the integration of computers and communications technologies is introduced at INTELCOM '77.
1978 NEC America, lnc. opens a plant in Dallas to manufacture PABX and key telephone systems. 1978 NEC acquires Electronic Arrays, Inc. of California and begins semiconductor chip production in the United States. 1979 NEAX61 digital switching system is delivered to the Manteca station in the United States. 1981 NEC stock is listed on the London Stock Exchange. 1981 NEC Semiconductors (UK) Ltd. is established to produce VLSIs and LSIs. 1982 First NEC International Zero Defects Convention is held in Tokyo. 1982 NEC introduces the 16-bit PC-9800 series personal computer. 1983 NEC stock is listed on the exchanges of Basel, Geneva and Zurich, Switzerland. 1983 NEC changes its English company name to NEC Corporation. 1984 NEC Information Systems, Inc. starts manufacturing computers and related products in the United States.
1990 New head office building, the "Super Tower" is completed. 1990 Joint venture agreements are established to manufacture and market digital electronic switching systems and LSIs in China. 1992 New corporate vision is formulated and new corporate identity is introduced. 1993 NEC's asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching system, the NEAX61 ATM Service Node, goes into service in the United States. 1993 NEC Europe, Ltd. is established as a holding company for European operations. 1994 The NEC C&C Research Laboratories, NEC Europe, Ltd. is opened in Germany. 1996 NEC (China) Co, Ltd. is established as a holding company for Chinese operations. 1997 NEC develops a 4-Gbit DRAM. 1997 Semiconductor group is honored by receiving one of the first Japan Quality Awards. 1998 NEC opens the world's most advanced semiconductor R&D facility.
1999 Corporate innovation plan is introduced. 1999 Progressive Unity, a concept for next-generation communications network solutions is announced. 1999 100th anniversary celebration. 2000 A new corporate structure is introduced with the establishment of three market-specific in-house companies to focus on the Internet solutions business. 2001 NEC Launches New Company-Wide Positioning Statement "Empowered by Innovation". 2002 NEC Electronics Corporation is separated from NEC as a new semiconductor company. |
